The Little Kiel is a shallow inland body of water in the state capital of Kiel, divided into two parts by a bridge. Due to its connection to the Kiel Fjord, the Little Kiel is brackish water.

Until 1846, the Little Kiel, with today's Kiel Boat Harbor, formed a continuous branch of the Kiel Fjord. The city of Kiel at that time, today's Old Town, thus stood on a peninsula. To the north, between the Kiel Fjord and the Little Kiel, there was a swampy lowland, where a castle, today's Kiel Castle, secured access.

Thus, the Old Town of Kiel was almost completely surrounded by the waters of the fjord.

In 1846, the connection between the Kiel Boat Harbor and the Kiel Fjord was narrowed and a bridge was built.

In 1889, the Little Kiel was divided by a wooden bridge approximately 160 meters long.

In 1909, after embankments were built on both banks, this bridge was replaced by a larger, only approximately 20-meter-long, reinforced concrete bridge. In 2001, a new bridge, known as the Emil Lueken Bridge, was built on the same site.

In 1904, the Holsten Bridge at the junction between the Kleiner Kiel and Kieler Boating Harbor was demolished, and the water connection was filled in, except for a 230-meter-long connecting pipe.

In 1982, the connection between the Kieler Boating Harbor and Kiel Fjord was also filled in over a large area, except for a 150-meter-long connecting pipe.

The term "Kiel" comes from the Low German word for "wedge" and most likely means "fjord." Until 1864, there were two wedges: the Kiel Fjord, a water wedge into the Schleswig-Holstein mainland, a "Großer Kiel," and within this, the water wedge southwest of Kiel's old town, a "Kleiner Kiel." As the area was filled in, its significance faded, but the name remained. Today, the Little Kiel, separated by the only 20-meter-long Emil Lueken Bridge, makes one forget that until 1889, the banks here were only 116 meters apart, navigable only by boat.
