In the valley of the Glatt, below the ruin Helfenberg, lies the saltpeter cave. It is probably called that because saltpeter used to be burned there. The vernacular refers to the cave partly as St. Columbans cave.
The cave is at risk of collapse. The entry is therefore prohibited since May 1998.
The trails are still open and in close proximity to the cave there is a well-equipped fireplace.

Heavily eroded with warning posted - viewing from a distance is advised. Also suggest taking official path and not short-cut along river bed.

The saltpeter cave was a popular destination for decades. Entry has been prohibited since the ceiling collapse in May 1998. A new, spacious fireplace was set up near the cave.
The Columbanshöhle mentioned by Martina is a few hundred meters away from here, not to be confused.
