Friedrich von Halfern was a rich cloth manufacturer, with a part-time job as bank director and city councilor. But in his spare time he apparently still had enough time to work as a dendrologist. So about 200 years ago, the man got rare and unusually for Aachen tree species from different countries and planted there, including amber trees, araucaria, Engelmann spruce, deity trees, a pyramid oak, dawn redwood or the Lebanon cedar.

Not all of them withstood a violent storm in 1902. Maybe Von Halfern had a new hobby in the meantime, at any rate he did not let the trees being torn down replace them with new ones. Nevertheless, one still recognizes the idea of a planting in the style of the English landscape garden.

The surviving trees have long been placed as natural monuments under special protection, so that they could develop to enormous size. Even those who do not act as dendrologists can recognize the magnificent botanical giants as special. Even today, Von-Halfern Park is home to up to 200-year-old trees and plants from North America, Europe and Asia.

The beginnings of the park on the edge of the Aachen city forest go back to the 19th century. Some of the trees from that time have been preserved. The van Halfern family designed the Villa Grundhaus and the surrounding park for 3 generations. In 1925, the city of Aachen acquired the site and opened the park to the public. The villa served changing social and medical purposes and is currently used as a kindergarten.
