The Geusenweg is an old secret route that was used by the persecuted Protestants from Eupen, Aachen and Burtscheid to get to the church in Vaals.

When the Reformation spread in the Aachen area and the neighboring Duchy of Limburg in the 16th century and the Reformed were largely forbidden from practicing their new religion, many of them, especially Flemish and the Geusen (French: "Gueux" = beggars), moved ) people close to or belonging to them, until the 18th century, from both the Duchy of Limburg and Aachen itself and from Burtscheid via secret routes through the Aachen Forest to neighboring Vaals, where they were not persecuted and were able to continue to carry out their church rituals because in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands after its liberation from Spanish rule during the Eighty Years' War, the free exercise of religion was permitted. One of these secret paths on the German side near the Vaalserberg was later named Geusenweg.
