Powerful architecture, marked by time and with hard lines, the complex openly declares what was its military and defensive use, completely opposite to what it represents today: a meeting place and leisure venue for events and cultural programmes.

In 1441, after the defeat of Ostasio III da Polenta, Venice took control of Ravenna. Among the various works planned, great attention was paid to the reconstruction of the defensive works of the city.

So it was that in 1457 the Serenissima planned the construction of a fortress to protect the north/east side of the wall circuit until then little manned ...

From the 16th century Rocca Brancaleone gradually lost its military importance and in 1877 the Rava family became its owner.

It has belonged to the Municipality of Ravenna since 1965 and is an integral part of a large public park open to citizens and tourists, and of a cocktail bar-restaurant inside.
