CHURCH OF SALVADOR
The parish church of Beja, with its original Gothic design, underwent extensive remodeling and decoration from the 16th century onward.
One of Beja's four parish churches, some authors believe that the church of Salvador existed before 1300, and therefore, its original design dates back to the Gothic period. It was built on the edge of the former Moorish settlement and thus likely played an important role in evangelizing Beja's non-Christian population. It underwent extensive remodeling and decoration from the 16th century onward, with the oldest elements visible today dating back to this period.
With the restoration of the Diocese of Beja in 1770, the first prelate, Friar Manuel do Cenáculo, consecrated the Church of Salvador as a cathedral, a function it maintained until 1922.
