Convent of St. Francis / Pousada de S. Francisco
It was founded by the Franciscans, dating back to the 13th century. There is a document dated 1286 in which a group of authorities and dignitaries from Beja requested King Dinis' permission to invite the monks of St. Francis to settle in Beja. Authorization was granted, and the monks accepted the invitation. Construction work continued beyond 1348.
All that remains of the medieval building is the so-called Tomb Room, built in the 15th century, an important example of Gothic architecture in Portugal. The cloister is Manueline, dating from the 16th century, as are the chapter house and refectory, and the church dates from the late 17th or early 18th centuries.
