St. Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai are inextricably linked, from here all pilgrimage routes start to the top of the mountain where Moses received the ten commandments from God. Visiting the monastery is a must for most climbers, but only parts of the monastery are open to visitors; the valuable library inside can be viewed by prior arrangement. A significant collection of icons, which is one of the largest in the world, is also kept in St. Catherine's Monastery. For tourists and pilgrims, the monastery's guest house, St. Catherine Tourist Village, is in the immediate vicinity and offers inexpensive accommodation.

Catherine's Monastery is 1400 years old and the oldest Christian monastery still inhabited. It has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2002.
