Mount Sinai is one of the most sacred mountains on the African continent.

The one that is renamed the mountain of Moses culminates at 2,285 meters above sea level. She owes this nickname to the biblical episode which relates the moment when Moses received the Ten Commandments from the hands of God. A chapel and a mosque top the summit.

Now, the summit is popular with pilgrims and tourists. One of the key activities offered by the Bedouin guides is the ascent of the mountain for the majestic observation of the sunrise.

Watching the sunrise from the summit of Mount Sinai is kind of magic and worth the effort of climbing all the altitude and getting no sleep that night. Even though or because it is the desert, it will be pretty hot, when you descend, but chilly at night an in the morning before the sun warms you again. So pack some extra layers.

You should not have the romantic idea of solitude at the peak of Mount Sinai, just because you hike to the top in the middle of the night. There are tons of busses arriving and tourists on camels overtaking you. You just have to know.
