Facing the Bloodiest Day in Bad Kissingen's History

In 1866, the long-simmering conflict between Prussia and Austria erupted in a bloody "German Fratricidal War." The southern German states, including Bavaria, sided with Vienna. Bavarian units were deployed in and around Kissingen to defensive positions; on July 10, 1866, during the Main Campaign, a battle broke out between Bavarian and Prussian troops – resulting in many dead and wounded soldiers.

The Battle of Kissingen on July 10, 1866, had serious consequences for the town. Afterward, over 300 dead had to be buried and 1,300 wounded had to be cared for. Evidence of the events of that time in the form of graves, monuments, or simple crosses can be found throughout the town. Many of these can be found on the Kissingen Trail.
