The castle was built around 1240 by the brothers Rudolf and Friedrich von Crumbach, who called themselves "Von Rodenstein" from 1256 onwards. The castle has borne their name ever since. In the years that followed, the complex was rebuilt several times and its appearance changed. The Rodenstein family lived here until they died of the plague in 1635. Because the castle was no longer used, it slowly fell into disrepair. You can find more information at the castle gate.

Rodenstein Castle is a fortification of the lords of Crumbach and Rodenstein, whose ancestral seat was in Fränkisch-Crumbach. she got
built around 1240 as a stronghold against Reichenberg Castle,
whereby the Lords of Crumbach and Rodenstein enjoyed the full support of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen. In 1346, Erkenger, Lord of Rodenstein, sold half his share in the Rodenstein house to Count Wilhelm II of Katzenelnbogen.
Acquired in 1433
Philip I of Katzenelnbogen
further shares from Hermann and Konrad von Rodenstein. enfeoffed in 1436
Count Johann IV von Katzenelnbogen the Noble Hans, Lord of Rodenstein and Lißberg, with half of Rodenstein Castle.

In 1479, with the extinction of the Katzenelnbogen family, their possessions fell under Henry III. to the Landgraviate of Hesse. The castle did not become a ruin as a result of warlike events. A sketch by Valentin Wagner in 1634 still shows it as a castle-like complex with intact buildings.
