The third Harburg town hall

When strolling through Harburg, the path should definitely lead past the magnificent town hall. Its decorative facade never fails to impress. In the sunlight, the contrast between the red brick surfaces and the decorative elements made of light sandstone is particularly strong.

It is already the third town hall in the history of Harburg. The location was moved with each new building, because over the years the center of Harburg has moved further and further south from the Elbe at Harburg Castle. A competition was announced for the present building in 1888. Christoph Hehl emerged as the winner. The foundation stone was laid in 1890. Then, according to Hehl's plans, the neo-Renaissance style building was completed in 1892.

In 1937, due to the Greater Hamburg Act, Harburg passed from the state of Prussia to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Although the town hall lost its original function as a result, it has remained the seat of the authorities to this day.

Harburg's town hall square is an example of urban square design from the Wilhelminian period.
The town hall itself was built in 1889 for the then independent city of Harburg in the Neo-Rainnassance style. On March 11, 1933, the incumbent mayor was driven out by the SA and SS at gunpoint. The building was severely damaged during the Second World War. Today the district assembly meets here.

The post office is opposite the town hall. On the left is the former Harburg swimming pool. A residential building with a mayor's apartment is to the north.
The Jacobusweg and the official hiking trail Harburg - Appelbüttel - Kiekeberg - Waldfrieden run here. An S-Bahn station is 150 m away.
