Fort Malakoff was built as a multi-storey gun bunker. The construction and conversion of this structure on the left bank of the Rhine fell between 1843 and 1873, mainly during the second fortification phase (1841-1848). The work was given the name Fort Malakoff by the Crimean War in Russia in 1855. In 1863 ownership of the building passed from the fortress to the Hessian Ludwig Railway. From this point on, it was made available to socially disadvantaged residents as poor housing. (Wikipedia)

The Caponiers "Fort Malakoff"

The Caponiers "Fort Malakoff" on the banks of the Rhine

A few steps further north on the banks of the Rhine you will find the mighty, quadrant-shaped "Fort Malakoff". Technically not a fort, this caponier got its name from minor detours. A previous building erected in 1843 was given this name by the Crimean War in Russia in 1855. In Sevastopol, a city on the Crimean Peninsula, there was a particularly heavily fortified tower: the Malakoff Tower. Since then, "Malakoff" has been used for particularly defiant buildings - also in the civil sector, such as colliery towers on the Ruhr. The two successor buildings, the last of which (erected in 1873) still stands today, took on this name as "Fort Malakoff".
