The Phnom Sampeau Execution Caves are a Khmer Rouge (KR) execution site on Phnom Sampeau, a hill 11 kilometers southwest of Battambang in western Cambodia. The KR killed their victims at the top of the cave at the edge of a daylight shaft or ceiling hole and dumped the bodies inside. [1] Men and women were placed in separate caves, with their clothing in another. [1] Phnom Sampeau (Sampeau Hill) has several caves that traditionally served as Buddhist temples. A large glass memorial in the cave next to the skulls and bones, as well as a golden reclining Buddha, commemorate the massacre. A memorial constructed of chain-link fence and chicken wire contains human bones. [2] [3]
