Near the town of Nismes, the Viroin-Hermeton Nature Park is home to an exceptional nature reserve. A narrow gorge, up to 20 meters deep, is home to a biotope rich in biodiversity. This gorge was formed over millions of years by rainwater erosion. The particular soil conditions created a ravine with large boulders. The "Fondry des Chiens" is a nature reserve and is considered a natural monument. The trail to the top can be quite technical, but the difficult sections are actually short.

The Fondry des Chiens is a sinkhole in the Viroin-Hermeton Natural Park, located in the municipality of Viroinval, sub-municipality of Nismes, in the Calestienne. This natural phenomenon is a true masterpiece of Mother Nature and has no equal in our country.
Over millions of years, water has carved a huge hole in the hard limestone. In some places this hole can be up to 20 meters deep. The rocks in the pit have impossibly soft curves and make it a spectacular sight.
Protection: The entire area is integrally protected and is classified as a natural monument. Next to the Fondry des Chiens there is a beautiful calcareous grassland, where thousands of blue flower heads of the rare bollard flower stand out in the spring.

A beautiful, varied walk that has been on my list for a long time. The Fondry des Chiens is sometimes described as 'The Grand Canyon of Belgium'. With a length of 100m and a depth of 20m this seems a bit exaggerated to me, but nevertheless it is a unique piece of nature in our small country, with a wide range of rare flora and fauna and a paradise for photographers.

Absolutely must see. It's only a mini canyon but actually larger than I expected it to be. And worth taking the time to explore it completely. The whole area around it also feels quite different from its surroundings.

Here and there I read that this location is sometimes called 'Grand Canyon of Belgium'. With its length of 100m and depth of 20m this is a bit of an overstatement I'm afraid :-)
But nevertheless a beautiful and exceptional area for a small country like Belgium.
It is possible to descend into the sinkhole, but this may not be for everyone because slips on the slippery rocks are not excluded.
The surrounding, varied hiking trails are really worth discovering. Rocks, forests, fields, rivers, everything is there for a wonderful day out.

Compared to the marketing, it's slightly disappointing as an attraction. On the positive side, when we visited, it was very quiet and peaceful. The hiking paths in the surrounding forest could do with a little maintenance, but the signs for the routes of various distances are well placed and easy to follow.

If you enjoy climbing and scrambling, the gorge's interior is a fun playground. The descent can be made via a relatively easy path down from the gorge's edge, or a more challenging one via some steeper, rocky sections.
Only do this in dry weather!
