The Mythical Story of the Union of Xin and Dong Zui Sanfeng
Liu Ling, one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove in Yindai, was famous for his love of wine. One day, he arrived in Luoyang and walked to the door of Du Kang Winery. Looking up, he saw a verse on the door: "A tiger gets drunk in the mountains with one cup, and a dragon sleeps in the sea with two cups." The horizontal banner read: "Sanfeng doesn't want money unless he's drunk." Liu Ling was very dissatisfied, so he went to the winery and, after drinking a glass, wanted to drink more wine. Du Kang advised him not to drink, but he drank the second and third cups. He felt dizzy for a while and eventually returned home. He told his wife to put him in a puddle of wine if he lost consciousness, and to place yeast, wine cups, and wine jugs on top. His wife had no choice but to do as he was told.
Three years later, Du Kang came to Liu Ling's house and said to him: Liu Ling drank his wine three cartloads ago and still owes him money. Angrily, he said to his wife: "I drank your wine three years ago and I'm still unconscious. How dare you ask for the money?" Du Kang hurriedly said: "Don't worry! He's just drunk." So he and Liu's wife came to Liu Ling and called out to him: Liu Ling, wake up! Liu Ling, wake up! Shortly after, Liu Ling yawned, opened his eyes, and repeatedly exclaimed: "Du Kang's good wine!" Du Kang's good wine! Since then, the saying "Du Kang's good wine, one drank three cartloads" has been passed down to this day. It is said that Du Kang and Liu Ling both became immortal and ascended to heaven. Du Kang made wine to get Liu Ling drunk, thus granting him the enlightenment to become immortal.
