The fieldstone church with its recessed choir and apse was built around 1200.

The church interior was extensively renovated after 1991. The church tower was completely renovated at the beginning of the 21st century. The European Union is supporting the renovation through the "Leader+" Community Initiative.

The fieldstone church consists of a nave, a square choir, and a smaller, semicircular apse. The stones are evenly stacked up to the windows.

An 18th-century half-timbered turret with yellow brick, a Baroque cap, and a lantern-shaped top sits on the western gable of the nave. The ridge turret and the nave roof are in very poor condition. Some of the window openings are still visible in their original outlines, as are the now-walled-up portals on the north and south sides.

The simple Baroque altarpiece bears the painting "Christ and the Sinner," a gift from Duke Leopold III Friedrich of Anhalt-Dessau.
The church interior was extensively renovated after 1991 and is in good condition. The organ, however, is in need of major repair due to its poor condition, especially since it is one of the most historically valuable instruments in this region.

In 1996, Magdeburg artist Richard O. Wilhelm decorated the sanctuary of the Protestant St. Mary's Church in the neighboring town of Steutz with colored glass windows.
