The Rhine Gate is located on the western edge of today's old town of Breisach am Rhein. It is an entrance portal in the French Baroque style and belonged to the former Breisach fortress. Originally, the gate bordered the Rhine; this only changed with the straightening of the Rhine in the 19th century.

The Museum of Local History, maintained by the city of Breisach am Rhein, has been open since 1991 and has welcomed nearly 150,000 visitors. It is housed in one of Breisach's remaining city gates, the Rhine Gate (Rheintor), built in the second half of the 17th century by the French architect Jacques Tarade based on a design by Vauban. It is one of the most beautiful surviving fortress gates in Europe.

Exhibits, models, pictures, and documents vividly recount Breisach's more than 4,000-year history of settlement, from the Stone Age to the present day. The main focus is on Breisach's Münsterberg hill as the seat of a Celtic prince (this section is currently being redesigned), Breisach during Roman times (Breisach is the only "Roman imperial city" in Baden-Württemberg, thanks to the documented visit of Emperor Valentinian I in 369), Breisach as a central location in the Early Middle Ages, and as one of the largest and most modern fortresses in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Other sections are dedicated to St. Stephen's Minster (with exhibits from the Minster treasury), the numerous monasteries that once existed here, the castle built by the Zähringer family and destroyed in the 18th century, the garrison town (1893-1919), and the destruction of 1945.
