The Museum of City History, maintained by the city of Breisach am Rhein, has existed since 1991 and has had almost 150,000 visitors since then. It is housed in one of the surviving city gates of Breisach, the Rhine Gate built in the second half of the 17th century by the French architect Jaques Tarade based on a design by Vauban, one of the most beautiful surviving fortress gates in Europe.

Exhibits, models, pictures and documents vividly tell of the more than 4,000-year settlement history of Breisach, from the Stone Age to the present day. The focal points are the Breisacher Münsterberg as the seat of a Celtic prince (this department is currently being redesigned), Breisach in Roman times (Breisach is the only "Roman imperial city" in Baden-Württemberg due to the documented visit of Emperor Valentinian I in 369), Breisach as Central place in the early Middle Ages and as one of the largest and most modern fortresses in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Other areas are dedicated to the St. Stephen's Minster (with exhibits from the Minster treasure), the monasteries that were once here in large numbers, the castle built by the Zähringen family and destroyed in the 18th century, the garrison town (1893-1919) and the destruction of 1945.
