This cobblestone road in Tiense quartzite is a rural road, partly lined with (hawthorn) hedges and rows of trees through the valley of the Kleine Gete. It opened up the vast area of wet hayfields south of Zoutleeuw. Close to the city, the road ran along the Spanish citadel, which was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century and is now only recognizable in the relief. At the city walls, the road connected to the Koepoort, one of the five entrance gates in the third city wall around Zoutleeuw.

The Koepoortstraat, also called ‘Koeystraet’ in archive texts, is an old road, the route and function of which have remained virtually unchanged over time. This is evident from a comparison of the current situation with the city plan of Zoutleeuw by Jacob van Deventer (circa 1560), the Villaret map (1745) and the Ferraris map (1771-1778), where the road is shown as a tree-lined road. The historical route was probably paved with cobblestones shortly before 1885, as can be seen from the topographic maps from that period. Previously, the road route was registered as unpaved. The paving may have been carried out during the period of the construction of the fruit track (1878), when major infrastructure works were carried out in the region. The route currently forms the local connecting road with Helen.

The Koepoortstraat is one of the few cobblestone roads in Hageland that has been preserved over such a long stretch (1.8 km). Over almost the entire length, the paving consists of Tiense quartzite, a local type of cobblestone. This makes the road surface remarkably homogeneous (with the exception of a few sloppy repairs in a different type). In several places the road surface shows deeply incised rut formation. The width varies between 300 and 340 cm.
