Hoa Lo Prison, infamous as the "Hanoi Hilton," stands as a grim relic of both the French colonial era and the Vietnam War in Hanoi's urban landscape.

Built by the French in the late 19th century, Hoa Lo Prison, initially called Maison Centrale, was a symbol of colonial dominance designed to detain and suppress Vietnamese revolutionaries.

During the Vietnam War, the prison's role shifted when it became a facility for holding American prisoners of war, earning it the nickname "Hanoi Hilton." In contrast to its grim past, the North Vietnamese government claimed to have treated the captured American pilots humanely, a claim disputed by the prisoners themselves.
