The Temple of Literature was the first university of Vietnam. High officials were trained here for civil service. The Temple of Literature was built in honor of Confucius in 1070 by King Ly Thanh Tong.

The complex is divided into 5 walled courtyards.
Paths and gates in the central area were reserved exclusively for the rulers.
