Judiciary on the mountain
In the Middle Ages, the Markelose Berg played an important role in Twente judiciary. Saxons from the surrounding area held their popular assemblies there on the 'dingplaats'; a place that was specially marked off for the judiciary with branches, connected by a cord. The old municipal coat of arms of Markelo still refers to this. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the bishops of Utrecht were also inaugurated on the Markelose Berg as feudal lords of Twente. The bishop's mitre in the coat of arms of Markelo is a reminder of that time.
