The hiding place in Markelo (municipality of Hof van Twente) reminds the residents of Markelo of the people in hiding who tried to stay out of the hands of the occupier.
This hiding place served as a temporary shelter for people in hiding during the Second World War, including probably Jewish families, because it was popularly called the “Jöddenkoel”. This hiding place was of course kept secret and was only known to a few local residents. They provided the people in hiding with food in the dark.
Establishment
The reason for establishing this hiding place is the realization of the walking route Kerkepaden-Tichelroutes Markelo in 2008 on the initiative of the Stichting Cultuur Historische Elementen Rondom Markelo. Several elements have been restored around De Kattenberg as a reference to the events in the Second World War.
