Port Louis is rich in historical sites, such as the observatory, built on this very spot in 1832 by the engineer John Augustus Lloyd.
The observatory was built on the ruins of a tower then erected by Governor La Bourdonnais. It played a crucial role in the port's weather forecasting, guiding ships and instructing sailors to avoid terrible cyclones.
In 1866, it was sold to the New Mauritius Dock Company to finance the construction of the Royal Alfred Observatory in Pamplemousses, and in 1880, it was demolished.
Today, the observatory is a landmark in the port's history and a popular stop for visitors to the Caudan Waterfront, where they can discover local food as well as culinary delights from near and far.
