Alt Eberstein Castle is one of the three castles on the Black Forest hills surrounding Baden-Baden. It served as a grand defensive fortification for the Margraviate of Baden. The ruins offer fantastic views over the Black Forest, the Rhine plain, and the Vosges Mountains. There's also a pleasant restaurant for a rest, open from April to November. In summer, there's a beer garden.

A beautiful excursion destination with stunning views in all directions. Easily accessible on foot or by mountain bike. Not far away are the Battert rock formation with the old Baden-Baden Castle and the Merkur mountain.

Alt Eberstein can be wonderfully integrated into tours around the well-known Battertfelsen and the Wolfschlucht. There is also a bus connection to the vicinity of the castle ruins.

When the sun is shining it is very nice to sit in the courtyard, eat well and enjoy the view. The hosts are friendly and the food is also very good quality.

May 2020: The castle is closed. You can only access the upper parking lot on foot. The restaurant is closed because it is currently impossible to comply with hygiene regulations. The castle is closed because there have been repeated parties there, and there was apparently some vandalism.

If you can't get inside the castle, you unfortunately can't see the surrounding area. An alternative view: The Burnt Rock.

The builders of the castle are the Counts of Eberstein in Swabia, whose ancestral seat it also became. Alt-Eberstein Castle is strategically located on a hilltop. The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1197. At the end of the 13th century, the Counts of Eberstein ceded the castle to the Margraves of Baden. In addition to expanding the building, the Margraves also used it as a residence and widow's house (Witwenheim). At the end of the 15th century, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. After the Romantic era made ruins fashionable in the 19th century, initial efforts were made to preserve it. A worthwhile investment: From the keep, built on the castle's shield wall (an exceptionally thick defensive wall), visitors are offered a magnificent panoramic view of the entire castle, the Black Forest, and the Rhine Valley, all the way to the Vosges Mountains in France.

Unfortunately, the castle has been closed for several years (as of June 2024). The state of Baden-Württemberg, as the owner, should come up with something. There should be an opportunity to climb the tower at least once on weekends, and a place to stop for refreshments would certainly be welcome.

There is a restaurant in the castle, the entire facility is privately operated. When the restaurant is closed, access is not possible, not even to the tower (located outside the restaurant). A shame!

It is NOT worth including the point in the hike. The castle is closed and there is no view. Better to walk to the Battert Rock!
