How did the Hallenaar get his nickname Vaantjesboer?
During the Middle Ages, criminals were sometimes sentenced to a pilgrimage. Depending on the crime, this was far or near. As proof of the penance, the pilgrim brought a metal pin. The ordinary pilgrims also wanted such a metal pin, which meant that demand exceeded supply.
That is why, in the middle of the 15th century, they switched to pennants. These were made on triangular pieces of cloth. A woodcut served as a stamp to print them. In Halle, such a flag is called a 'voantje', hence the name Vaantjesboer.
