The Flanders Fields Museum is located in the Lakkenhalle on the Grote Markt
You can count on a number of hours to visit the museum, depending on your interest.
Brief history of the building: The Cloth Hall (Grand Place) is one of Europe's largest civil buildings in Gothic style.
The original cloth hall was built between 1200 and 1304.
The belfry is 70 m high and was built between 1200 and 1230 as a sign of the power of the citizenry. From the late 12th century until 1817, real live cats were thrown from the belfry. These have been plush cats since 1955.

The cloth halls were previously used as a trading place for cloth. The cloth was sold in every doorway at the bottom of the belfry. Ypres was very famous in the Middle Ages for the good quality of its cloth.

The building was completely destroyed during the First World War and later rebuilt. The restored cloth hall was completed in 1967. The architects opted for a faithful reconstruction of the pre-war situation. The original stones are still visible at the bottom of the cloth halls, these are the largest. The further up you go, the smaller the stones become.

Ypres was once a medieval trading center and a city with a long and rich history. During the First World War, Ypres was largely reduced to rubble as no fewer than five of the bloodiest battles of the war took place in the area.

Make sure to check out the In Flanders Fields Museum, housed in the reconstructed Cloth Hall, which tells the story of the First World War. Another major attraction is the moving Menin Gate Memorial for the Missing. The visit at 8 p.m. is an emotional experience, when the trumpeters blow the last passage under the Menin Gate - a tradition that has taken place every evening since 1928.

Have a koffie in one of the most picturesque marketplaces in Flanders or take a stroll along the historic city walls for a wonderful view of Ypres.

The Cloth Hall in Ypres is one of the largest Gothic-style civil buildings in Europe. Built between 1230 and 1304, it served as a covered market place for cloth, an important trade product in the Middle Ages. The 70-metre high belfry, which was built from 1250 onwards, emphasises the power and wealth of the city of Ypres at that time. During the First World War, the Cloth Hall was completely destroyed, but it was later meticulously rebuilt and completed in 1967. Today it houses the In Flanders Fields Museum and the Ypres Museum.
