Beautiful cathedral from the time when Ypres still had a bishop. Ypres used to be part of the diocese of Saint-Omer. It had its own cathedral. In 1561, the diocese of Thérouanne was dissolved into three dioceses: Boulogne-sur-Mer, Saint-Omer and Ypres. The church of the St. Martin's Monastery (regular canons of Saint-Augustine) was then elevated to cathedral. Cornelius Jansenius was the most famous bishop of the diocese of Ypres. The cathedral is now known as the St. Martin's Church.

The Ypres Cat Parade takes place every year on the 2nd Sunday of May. Until 1817, live cats were thrown down from the belfry. In 1938, cat throwing was reintroduced with plush cats.

The origin of this tradition is said to have originated in 962 when Count Baldwin III gave the order to throw 3 live cats from the towers of the house "De Korte Meers" every year. This was supposedly necessary to renounce evil. This idea appears not to be so unique because this tradition also exists in the French Amiens.

St. Martin's Church was completely destroyed in WWI. J. Coomans was responsible for the reconstruction from 1922 on the basis of pre-war measurements and restoration plans. The building is a faithful representation of the early Gothic 13th-century church. The church is fully accessible and can be visited every day. The tower is not accessible.

The original church consisted of a choir, built in 1221-1251, the nave and north transept, built in 1254-1266, the south transept, built about 1300, and the west tower added in 1433-1470.
The church has a multi-lobed appearance. The materials are about as differentiated as those of the old church. The spire on the square western tower was an addition during the reconstruction. The tower has a substructure of natural stone, which from the second section changes into brick masonry in which natural stone is used for corner blocks and decorations. The central aisle, side aisles and transepts are marked per bay by supporting flying buttresses. The crossing carries a wooden roof ridge. The accentuated southern transept facade has a stone substructure that turns into brick for the two sections and the gable top is flanked by stair turrets. The heavy choir made of natural stone refers to the early Gothic style.
In the interior, natural stone has been extensively used for structural parts and the facing. In the nave the bays are rhythmized by stone arches on columns. Above this there is a triforium between foliage frieze and fanlights. The cross rib vaults are made of yellow brick. In the southern aisle the sandstone ribs are supported by three-tiered colonets; the northern aisle is rhythmized by half-columns. Bundle pillars mark the intersection. The spacious choir has side chapels and five-sided apsidioles.
Despite the destruction, many art treasures were saved and placed back in the church after the reconstruction. The mausoleums in the choir belong to Ypres bishops (16th-17th century). A floor stone bears the year 1638, the year of Jansenius' death. The furniture was largely designed by J. Coomans in an eclectic Romanesque-Gothic style: the high altar, the altar of Our Lady of Thuyne with a polychromed miracle statue, the marble pulpit with bronze scenes, the confessionals, the stone rood loft.
