The Besenhorster Sandberge are unique in Schleswig Holstein. This area was created after the last ice age. Sand was deposited by the runoff water, which was then blown up by the wind to form dunes. Even today they are still a considerable height of up to 20 m! A special feature are the flood troughs, whose water balance depends on the water level of the Elbe. The hiking trail leads through a dune landscape and a loose stand of birch, oak and pine trees. It is a beautiful backdrop to block out the stress of everyday life and listen to the birdsong. You can also see the remains of the Düneberg powder factory while walking, for example with your dog.

For hikers and walkers, the hiking car park at the exit of Geesthacht is recommended (Am Schleusenkanal - behind the B404 bridge in the direction of Altengamme).

Parking spaces are available.

Natural treasure of the Besenhorster Sandberge
This scenic area on the edge of Geesthacht was created from sand deposits from the Ice Age that were blown up into dunes. Even today, the dunes are up to 20 meters high and covered with oak, pine and birch trees. In the immediate vicinity are the Elbe sand meadows, a dry sandy grassland with rare plant species.

When hiking, you can also see the remains of the Düneberg powder factory, which was located there until the end of the Second World War. Nature has now reclaimed this area.

There is a signposted network of paths in the nature reserve. There are circular hiking trails. For hikers, we recommend the hiking car park at the edge of Geesthacht (Am Schleusenkanal - behind the B404 bridge in the direction of Altengamme) or you can start at Heuweg 65 in Geesthacht. There are parking spaces on Heuweg. A small path (easy to miss) leads between two houses to an underpass on the other side of the B 404; from here the paths in the nature reserve are signposted.
