The Alcarria Baja is an ornithological paradise for steppe birds, occupying a large territory between the provinces of Madrid, Cuenca and Guadalajara. It is a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and from mid-autumn to early winter it is easy to spot great bustards, lesser kestrels, little bustards, black-bellied sandgrouse, stone curlews, Montagu's and marsh harriers, Iberian sandgrouse and black wheatear, among the common species.
