Until the 17th century, the Meuse River was not yet embanked, allowing it to take a completely different course after a wet winter. This shows that the villages of Uikhoven, Boorsem, Kotem, and others were once located to the left and then to the right of the Meuse. The first dike was built in Uikhoven at the initiative of Count Ernest d’Aspremont-Lynden (1628). Today, the dike is finished with a stone section alongside which the road runs. A staircase provides access from the town center to the nature reserve, which here is a wide path right next to the Meuse.
