The city wall was secured by bastions. These are structures that project from the line of the fortification wall. There were several bastions along the city wall, and one could always see from one to the next. In this way, the area immediately in front of the wall, which the defenders could not see from the parapet, could be observed from the side and, if necessary, reached with weapons.
