For 400 years, Hirano-ya has operated as an ayu (sweetfish) wholesaler and a tea house along the ancient Atago Highway, which leads to Atago Shrine, the deity of fire prevention. Situated near the Ichinotorii (First Gate), Hirano-ya has served travelers its famous Shinko Dango (rice flour dumplings) while continuing its ayu trade.
Connection with Atago Shrine

The distant ancestors of Hirano-ya had a deep connection with Atago Shrine, which is why the tea house was established at the foot of the first gate. Atago Shrine is dedicated to the fire prevention deity, and the saying, "Seven visits to Ise, three to Kumano, and monthly visits to Atago" was widely known among the people of the Edo period. Atago Shrine became a popular destination for believers, who came in great numbers. Hirano-ya has long welcomed pilgrims along their journey to and from the shrine.
Fresh Ayu from the Hozu River

Due to its proximity to the Hozu Gorge, Hirano-ya also operated as an ayu wholesaler. Fresh ayu, caught in the clear waters of the Hozu River, were rested overnight and then delivered by "Ayu-mochi" carriers, who transported them to Kyoto's top restaurants using balance poles. Over time, Hirano-ya began serving ayu dishes to its guests, which remains a cherished tradition to this day.
Present Day Hirano-ya

The current hostess is the 14th-generation owner, who, along with the previous hostess, has been offering warm hospitality to guests for years. She now runs the tea house alongside the 15th-generation young hostess. As always, every day at Hirano-ya starts with lighting the traditional stove, continuing the same customs from the past.

About the Interior

Located beside the Ichinotorii gate along the ancient Atago Highway, Hiranoya was built approximately 400 years ago, during the early Edo period. Many parts of the main building remain just as they were back then, and even the newest inner rooms date back to the Tenpō era.
