Believers have been donating Torii gates since the Edo period to express prayer and appreciation. Fushimi Inari Taisha is famous today for his Senbon Torii "Thousand Torii".

Since the place is very popular, it is almost impossible to take pictures without tourists being in the picture. You should therefore avoid coming on weekends or public holidays and prefer to appear as early or late as possible.

There are no opening hours, access is possible at any time.

If you stroll past the gon-den (makeshift house for the kami when the honden is being repaired) behind the honden and climb a staircase, you will come to a large torii that leads to another and yet another torii. This marks the beginning of the Senbon Tori (thousands of Torii), a path lined with Torii, which is the iconic image of Fushimi Inari Taisha. The huge gates are made of shiny vermilion and black and have inscriptions from the donors. The thousands of Torii (between 10 and 30 thousand) were donated by various people who sought Inari's blessings for their businesses. Traders from all over Japan pay large sums of money to give the shrine a torii. The large torii are replaced by a fork in the road and two smaller torii. They are so close together that they form an almost perfect tunnel that completely obscures the outside world. When you stroll through one of the Tori tunnels, you feel lost in a magical red world. It is an almost unreal feeling that overwhelms you if you venture further into the mountains through this surreal passage.

You can perfectly come by train (Inari Station) or bike.

Please note that bikes are not allowed on the Fushimi Inari Temple and Torii Area, but right in front of the Fushimi Inari-Taisha is a parkinglot for cars, but the made room for parking bikes!

You can visit it all year round at any time. Bring a flashlight with you when you planing to go near sunset!

I went in January ~10:30AM and in April ~5:30pm (near sunset) and it was not very crowded.

I recomment to take a path off the main route to see nice hidden shrines and a bambo forst. You can find an example at my already done tours.
