Vukovar is a city in Croatia, in eastern Slavonia. It is the largest Croatian river port on the Danube in the Croatian part of Srijem. It is the administrative, educational, economic and cultural center of the Vukovar-Srijem County, and after Vinkovci it is the second largest city in the county in terms of population.
During the Homeland War, the city played a decisive role in the defense of Croatia: during the three-month battle for Vukovar, the biggest battle in the Homeland War, it was completely destroyed and looted, and its population was exiled and killed after the Serbian occupation. Due to the suffering of Croatian defenders and civilians during and after the siege, Vukovar is nicknamed the City of Heroes and the City of Heroes.
