In the Balkan war of the 90s, the water tower was bombarded by the Serbs during the day, they tried to destroy it completely. During the night, at the risk of their lives, Croats climbed the tower again and again and hoisted the Croatian flag, which was shot down by the Serbs during the day. The Serbs did not manage to collapse the water tower.
The remains of the tower remained as a memorial against the war.
