            The most impressive climb to Walhalla is from the Danube, via the southern portal. That means you start on the banks of the Danube and then walk up the many stone steps to Walhalla. It's a bit strenuous, but also very impressive. A road runs along above the Danube, as does the cycle path from Regensburg. You can cycle right down to the bottom of the steps and park there. And if you come by boat, you also get off at this point.

                If you are coming by car, the most convenient place to park is in the small town of Donaustauf. Here we found the official, free Walhalla car park. It is also perfect for visiting the secret Donaustauf castle ruins - see below in this article. This means you can visit both highlights from this car park. From the car park, you can take a leisurely stroll down to the Danube. In about a quarter of an hour you will be at the start of the hiking trail that leads you to the stone steps.

                If you are coming by bike: The Danube Cycle Path also runs here. As mentioned, you can cycle to the start of the hiking trail and park your bike there. From the Danube Cycle Path you can then walk up the wide steps.

                If you are taking the bus from Regensburg to Walhalla, take the Walhallastraße stop for this climb. This is in the town of Donaustauf. From here, first follow the main road or the Danube for about 500 metres to the jetty. Then take the stairs up to the Bavarian Palace.
