The church is situated picturesquely high above the Danube valley and offers from its portal a beautiful view over the river. The construction of the church goes back to a hostile robbery around 1388. At that time the neighboring castle Donaustauf was besieged and three soldiers stole the hosts from the castle chapel and hid them in the forest. Miraculously, the hosts were rediscovered, and in gratitude, this church was built here.

St. Salvator Pilgrimage Church

The construction of the church dates back to a theft of hosts in 1388. After healings were reported in connection with the recovery of the hosts and the prayers associated with them, a pilgrimage developed, which made the construction of a place of worship necessary.

According to a restoration report by the State Office for Monument Preservation on the first St. Salvator Church from 1389, it was determined that the length of the first stone church built by Thomas Sittauer from the west wall to the east to the current location of the pulpit was probably around 8.76 m. After the church was expanded to its current size at the beginning of the 17th century, it suffered several times from the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War.

The statue of St. Salvator was created at the beginning of the 17th century. Until the last renovation in 1974, it stood in the middle of the church, exactly where the stolen hosts were found. The bells also date from this period; they have a diameter of 47 and 55 cm and were cast in 1643 in the Georg Deiner bell foundry in Straubing.
St. Salvator underwent a structural change between 1743 and 1745, when the then pastor Friedrich Weinzierl had the church converted to baroque style at his own expense. This also resulted in the 13 ceiling paintings by Otto Gebhard, a student of the Asam brothers.
The high altar - an elegant creation of the baroque and rococo style - was created, like the ceiling frescoes, in 1745 by the sculptor Anton Neu from Prüfening. The altarpiece shows Christ with the disciples in Emmaus. The tabernacle was designed by a carpenter from Alteglofsheim. The legend of the pelican is depicted above the tabernacle. The pulpit is baroque after 1700, in the middle is Jesus Christ as St. Salvator, to his left and right are the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul.
In the years 1971 to 1980, the restoration of St. Salvator Church took place with a lot of private commitment. During the interior restoration, remains of original paintings were discovered under a 5 cm thick layer of plaster, which were preserved on a larger scale in the west part of the church. These are outstanding works by an Italian artist, painted around 1400 and are therefore a rare example of this type in Bavaria. Scenes from the New Testament are depicted.
