A typical landscape element on the river banks is the softwood floodplain, consisting of willows and poplar species, which is flooded several times a year for longer periods of time. The necessary water dynamics that characterize the population have not been restricted here by river engineering measures. The softwood floodplain, as the basis of life for many protected species, is itself a protected habitat type under the FFH Directive. White willows with their gnarled, often hollow trunks provide nesting and refuge for many bird and insect species. You can also find pollard willows - willows whose trunks were shortened as young trees to a height of around 1 to 3 meters and whose branches are then regularly trimmed.
