You can walk to the castle from the market square in about 15 minutes, or you can easily drive or take the bus directly to the castle.

From the castle, you have a wonderful view of the entire city and the surrounding area.

Once a fortress, now a palace. Probably built around 1200.

Since then, structural changes have been made repeatedly, and the palace has been used for various purposes. It has served as a fortified castle, an official residence, a women's prison, the headquarters of the Hitler Youth, a local history museum, and the headquarters of the National People's Army.

Since 2001, the palace has been extensively renovated and refurbished.

The Carpet Museum has been located there since 2010.

A mineral collection has been housed in the vaulted cellar since 2011.
Since 2013, a permanent exhibition called Illusorium has been housed there, offering insights into the extensive life's work of the Saxon graphic artist Regine Heinecke (1936–2019).

Changing exhibitions are also held in the buildings.

A painting by Titian can be viewed in the Knights' Hall.

Regular events are also held in the castle or in the castle courtyard.
