The shelter is located right next to the "Wachtberg Memorial near Berkum"

"The Wachtberg Memorial was erected in 1921 on the eastern slope of the 238-meter-high basalt summit of the Wachtberg in honor of the fallen of the First World War by the mayor's office of Villip (de.wikipedia.org, Berkum). Designed by the architect Franz Brantzky from Cologne, it was inaugurated on September 18, 1921 (de.wikipedia.org, List of monuments in Wachtberg). It is a quarry stone circular structure, which can be entered through an opening in the wall. The quarry stone wall encloses a quarry stone chapel, located directly opposite the entrance, as well as Stations of the Cross, which are regularly arranged along the wall within the circular floor plan. In front of the Stations of the Cross are stone plaques bearing the names of the fallen of the two World Wars in the surrounding area. Villages are noted.

Every year on Ascension Day, the Wachtberg Memorial is the destination of a star-shaped procession of the surrounding villages, followed by a horse blessing (naturpark-rheinland.de and de.wikipedia.org, Berkum). From the Wachtberg Memorial, there is a clear view over the Drachenfelser Ländchen to the southern Siebengebirge.
