Even if the village bell or the small bell tower in Worpswede seems somewhat inconspicuous, the ringing of the bells has had a special significance for centuries as a central symbol of devotion and encounter. According to tradition, the first bell bore an inscription stating that it was made in 1699 for the farmers in Worpswede to "honor the majesty of God". It was still the time of Swedish rule (see also Worpswede Castle Construction). At that time, only eight farmers lived in Worpswede and the cost of purchasing the prayer bell, as the inscription described it, must have been considerable for the community. It is assumed that the bell's ringing was also intended to encourage inner reflection when going to church, as there was no church with a bell at that time. It would be another 60 years before the Worpswede church was built and until then services were also held outdoors. What it looked like back then was impressively conveyed by Fritz Mackensen in his famous picture "Outdoor Church Service".

The bell was an early landmark of Worpswede and perhaps the first tourist attraction in our modern sense. Only 60 years after the village bell was erected, church services were held in the new church in Worpswede (built in 1759). Since then, the former prayer bell has served as the village bell, which was rung for important events. Almost 200 years passed in Worpswede and the village bell was evidently in use and the bell tower was maintained. However, since the bell fell victim to the metal collection in World War II, the remains of the now dilapidated bell tower were dismantled shortly afterwards.

In 1982, after a long period of planning and many consultations, the village bell was rebuilt. Today, this landmark adorns the farmers' row right next to the town hall like a greeting from the old days. Reflecting on the intention behind the building and the subsequent changing purposes also fits in with the different eras and their ways of thinking.
