The lake and its surroundings formed the "Breites Wasser" nature reserve, which lay between Worpswede and the village of Teufelsmoor. On October 3, 2019, the nature reserve was incorporated into the "Hammeniederung" nature reserve, which was designated on April 20, 2017.

The lake is located at the confluence of the Beek and the Hamme, about 2 km upstream of the Beek. The numerous oxbows of the streams and small irregular ponds with boggy banks, the so-called Blänken, form a "wet triangle" here, which constantly changes its appearance due to the changing water levels.

Numerous rare birds breed in this area and there is also a colony of seagulls. In autumn and spring, a number of migratory birds also rest here.

Numerous paths were created for hikers a few years ago.
