Europe broadcaster
In 1954, the French transmitter "Europa I" was set up on the so-called "Sauberg", 367 meters above sea level. It went into operation on January 1, 1955. The private radio station, whose studios are still located in Paris today, broadcasts a French-language radio program with an output of 2000 kW and, as a long-wave transmitter at a frequency of 183 kHz, reaches far beyond the borders of France the southwestern European area. The shell-shaped broadcasting hall, which was constructed using a prestressed concrete ceiling and whose facade is made entirely of glass, was the first building of this type in the world (length: 82m, width: 43m, maximum height: 16m). In 1999 the building was listed as a monument due to its uniqueness. The fact that the "Europe transmitter" in the Saar-Lor-Lux area can be seen from afar is due to the total of six red and white transmission masts, four of which are 280 meters high and form the main antenna of the transmission system. The reserve antenna consists of the two masts, which are still 234 meters high and are offset from the main masts. The year 1959 caused a stir. For technical reasons, a transmission mast had to be moved 103 meters in a vertical position, which meant a technical masterpiece. When the weather is good, this vantage point also offers a wonderful view over the Saar valley and the area around Saarlouis, the fortress city built by the "Sun King" Louis XIV.
