The cross on the border

The cross with two crossbars - an ancient symbol of Christianity - appears in Lorraine from the middle of the 15th century. It was an emblem on the war flags of the Counts Anjou, who had become lords of the duchy in 1431. During World War II, Charles de Gaulle made the Lorraine Cross a symbol of resistance against the war machine of the Third Reich. Now that this dark chapter in history has come to an end, the cross today calls for dialogue and for the further strengthening of friendly relations between our peoples. Dear hiker, you too can help build German-French friendship! As a token of your solidarity - like the pilgrim to St. James in prominent places along the way - lay a stone at the foot of this cross.
