The small district of Katzberg is separated from the Ehneser area by a narrow saddle. A climb up the Grieß or the neighboring Stiefvater is worthwhile because there is a wonderful panoramic view of the ridges of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Surrounded by Grieß and Stiefvater in the south, the Sommerberg in the north and the Schaumberg in the east, the small village of Katzberg lies in a valley basin. First mentioned in 1317 as Katzwaerte, a watchtower in the immediate vicinity of the village was part of the Schaumburg security system. The Sonneberg-Eisfeld railway line crosses the saddle between Sommerberg and Grieß at Katzberg after a climb of over a hundred meters, which is the highest point on the route at 506 m above sea level.

Between Katzberg and Schaumburg, at the foot of Schaumberg, were the farmsteads of Hörnleins- or Schneckenburg with a fish pond and mill, and the castle's horse paddocks were also proven to have been here.
The current townscape of Katzberg is characterized by a rural, formerly individual farm structure in an agriculturally diverse environment and the harmonious integration of new residential buildings that are in the immediate vicinity of the farmsteads.

In Katzberg, a second climb on the road from Schalkau to Eisfeld begins. It is a bit arduous, but probably the best route for cyclists coming out of the Itztal.
There are few cars here and the climb is bearable. Estimated to be under 10%.

Above Katzberg, on the edge of the Sommerberg forest, runs the Eisfeld - Sonneberg regional train line, which runs in two large curves down to Bachfeld and Schalkau.
