Neckar thoughts of a cyclist

In the morning I pedal,
The Neckar glitters beside me,
A river that still whispers in the city streets: "I am here."

The sun sparkles on the waves,
The air is cool, my breathing is heavy,
But plastic waste and old barrels
Float sadly behind.

I ride on, see boats,
The ducks swim through the dirt,
The Neckar, once so clear, so big,
Often seems hidden in the grey of the world.

The cars thunder on the bridges,
The smoke clouds my vision,
The people rush instead of looking,
How nature breaks its life.

The river tells of old days,
Where the forest still lines its banks,
Now it lies there, can no longer say anything,
Of a time that it dreams of.

And I, I cycle through the rush,
Feel the pain that it does not scream,
For every step I wish to heal,
That this river will stay for a long time.

But climate change, storm and heat,
Are tearing apart our old bond,
The Neckar weeps, and in the puddle
The world is reflected - our fault.

If we do not protect the earth,
With more respect and a new perspective,
The Neckar will soon be of no use either,
Its whispering will become a loud nothing.
