The Heidelberg Castle Association built the tower in 1876 and it was renovated twice in 1926/27 and 2003/04. Care was taken to ensure that the tower is safe to walk on and that the carefully stacked dry masonry is preserved.

The trees in front of the tower were recently "trimmed" - you now have a nice view of the Rhine plain again.
Addendum 1/24: The Gaisberg Tower was built from the remains of the "Trutzkaiser" - a defensive structure destroyed in the 30 Years' War that once stood further down the Gaisberg.

The Gaisberg Tower in Heidelberg is a monument that stands at the transition from the small plateau of the high Gaisberg to the north-west slope. It was designed by the architect Fritz Seitz and built in 1876 by the Heidelberg Castle Association. Very nice to look at with a good view.

The exterior masonry is probably unique for the area. These are carefully carved red sandstones that were probably obtained from the nearby Riesenstein quarry. All building blocks are only loosely stacked on top of each other without any lime mortar. This type of construction is called “dry stonework”.

I noticed two things about the towers in Heidelberg: Firstly, the towers were generally accessible, i.e. open to the public, and secondly, this was free of charge. I know it to be completely different from the Ruhr area. Great!

A 13-meter-high observation tower on the Gaisberg. From the top, you can't see anything, because the surrounding trees are significantly taller than the tower. It simply needs to be rigorously felled/cleared.
