The tower was built in the 13th century and originally served as part of the city's fortifications. In the 16th century, the tower was used as a prison for witches. It is believed that around 100 women and men were executed as witches in Kirchhain during this period. In the 18th century, it was closed as a prison and later used as a warehouse.
In the 1970s, the tower was restored and opened as a museum in 1978. The museum tells the story of the witch hunts and the role of the witch tower. The museum also has exhibitions on medieval torture devices and witchcraft.
