St. Gertrude Church, an impressive neo-Gothic building dating from 1886, stands on the banks of the Kuhmühlenteich lake. The church holds a very special significance for Hamburg, as the geographical center of the Hanseatic city is located very close to it. It lies between the church and the Kuhmühlenteich lake.

At 53 degrees, 34 minutes, 8 seconds north latitude and 10 degrees, 1 minute, 44 seconds east longitude. That's the common opinion. According to new calculations, the center could be a little further away, near Lerchenfeld High School, but for the people of Uhlenhorst – and Pastor Heinz-Jochen Blaschke – St. Gertrud remains the center of Hamburg.
The church celebrated its 125th anniversary on Palm Sunday 2010.

The center was calculated using official coordinates: 53° 34′ 8″ N, 10° 1′ 44″ E – and is thus located in one of the Hanseatic city's most charming residential areas.

St. Gertrud Church, built in 1886, stands almost modestly at the center, without proclaiming it loudly. For many Hamburgers, it is nevertheless a quiet landmark –
a place that connects without dominating.

Those who visit the center experience Hamburg from its unhurried side:
Strolls along the Kuhmühlenteich lake, small cafés in the surrounding area, and the feeling of being
in the middle of the city – without noise and hustle and bustle.
The place is even listed as a highlight for cyclists on Komoot.

The geographical center of Hamburg isn't a spectacular spot—but it is a poetic thought: that here, of all places, between water, brick, and church steeple,
the city unfolds in all directions. Those who visit it are not only at the center of Hamburg—but also, for a moment, completely at one with themselves.
